_________Safe and Secure Summer

July 13th, 2010

The summer months can be a time when your home or business is more vulnerable, however. Hot weather tempts people to leave windows and doors open and homes are left unattended when people go on their summer holidays.

The good news is that there are lots of things you can do to improve your security. Most burglaries are carried out by opportunistic thieves rather than ‘professional’ criminals who are looking for the easiest way of getting into a house without being seen or disturbed. If you can close off these opportunities you are much less likely to be burgled.

  1. Don’t leave side gates open or unlocked
  2. Make sure you shut any accessible windows if rooms are unattended or overnight.
  3. Don’t leave ladders out allowing access to otherwise inaccessible windows.
  4. Store securely any garden tools which could be used to force entry.
  5. Keep hedges trimmed and low so they don’t provide cover for burglars to break in.
  6. Keep spare keys properly concealed and secured.

Going Away This Summer?

Don’t forget to stay vigilant when preparing for your summer holiday. Just a few simple steps will help to keep your home safe and secure while you’re away:

  1. Let a neighbour or friend know that you’re going away.
  2. Arrange for them to check on your house – collect mail, open / close curtains.
  3. Remember to cancel your milk and newspapers
  4. Encourage a neighbour to park on your drive.
  5. Use timer switches to turn lights in during the evenings.
  6. Lock all external doors and windows and, if you have one, set your alarm.
  7. Keep all valuables out of sight.
  8. Don’t put your home address on luggage label when travelling out to your destination – write them out before your return journey.
  9. Don’t forget your garden! Effective garden security will help to keep your home secure.
  10. Royal Mail offer a Keepsafe service, where post is withheld for a period of up to two months and delivered to you on return from your holiday. For more information, visit www.royalmail.com

Police Warning Over Garden Sheds

April 8th, 2010

Police are urging garden shed owners in Shropshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands to maintain security to protect gardening equipment and other valuable items.

The warning comes as gardeners prepare for the new season and are likely to be checking lawnmowers, power tools and other major equipment.

Several shed burglaries have already been reported around the county in recent weeks and police are anxious owners step up security wherever necessary.

“Thefts from garden sheds are all too frequent.  Sheds are usually out of sight and relatively insecure but you can do things to help prevent  theft.

“It’s coming up to the time of the year when people are thinking about gardening.  Give some thought to your garden shed.  A little thought and care could go a long way to stop you becoming a victim and following the ‘Sheducate” tips will help protect your property.”

Secure the access to your shed/garage by locking gates and plant thorny bushes alongside walls and fences.

Have you marked the contents of your shed with your postcode and house number either visibly or with a UV pen or other property-marking system?  Make a note of serial numbers and photograph valuable items and ornaments.

External security lighting is a useful deterrent.

Doors of sheds require attention.  Use strong coach bolts (Dome heads) or non-return screws to secure door hinges.  Consider fitting a specialist shed bar or garage lock.  Fit a grille across windows.  Use robust closed-shackled padlocks and strong hasp and staples resistant to cutting.

Use the house.  Can valuable tools be kept in the house?  Never leave tools out so they can be used against your own property.

Chain up cycles, mowers, ladders and large tools.  Consider using specialist tool holders and clamps.

Alarm your shed or garage.
